MARCY, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's lacrosse team won their first NEAC Conference game of the season on Saturday over the Medaille Mavericks in convincing fashion 18-5. The Wildcats put their foot on the gas pedal in the second quarter of the game, hanging a six spot, and didn't look back.
The Wildcats played a great all-around game. The offense put up a season high 18 goals, while the defense kept the Mavericks off the scoreboard for the first 50 minutes of the game.
Nick Levanti (Clayville, N.Y.) led the charge for the Wildcats with six goals and three assists in the game. Six of his seven shots taken found the back of the net, the one that didn't result in a goal went wide in the 10th minute of the game.
Junior attack Tyler Heldt (Cicero, N.Y.) was the second leading scorer in the game for the Wildcats. Four of his seven shots on goal found the back of the net. Andrew Wurz (Utica, N.Y.) and Robert Cicak (Binghamton, N.Y.) each had two goals in the game.
Daniel Rivie (Ossining, N.Y.) forced a game high five turnovers, picked up three groundballs, and dished out an assist. Nicholas Stojkovski (Cicero, N.Y.) and Johnathan Sobolewski (Staten Island, N.Y.) tied with a team high seven groundballs.
Stojkovski had a great day on face-offs. He went 11-13 (85%) and accounted for 65% of the Wildcats 17 face-off wins (27 total attempts).
Senior captain Regan Seydler (Croghan, N.Y.) had a nice game on the defensive side of the field. He forced three turnovers and scooped up five groundballs. R.J. Ferrucci (Rome, N.Y.) earned the win for the Wildcats. He recorded a shutout, stopping both of the shots that Medaille put on goal during his 40 minutes of work.
For the Mavericks, Tony Cinotti had two goals. David Groves, Alexander Brennan, and Adam Spider each had a goal. Connor Meier forced a team high four turnovers and Jake Rush had a game high eight groundballs.
With the win, the Wildcats record improves to 3-6 (1-0 NEAC). The team will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Cazenovia College for a NEAC Conference game. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start at SUNY Poly's Wildcat Field.
