BUFFALO, NY – The SUNYIT men's soccer team took home the D'Youville College Labor Day Tournament Championship this past weekend, defeating D'Youville 3-2 Friday and Medaille College 2-0 Saturday. The two wins helped the Wildcats improve to 2-1 on the year.
SUNYIT put the first goal on the board against D'Youville when junior Johnathon Glossner (Carmel, NY/Carmel) scored at 20:37 off an assist from senior Kevin Nelson (Oneida, NY/Oneida), and would add another goal seven minutes later when senior Kenan Jusupovic (Utica, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) scored on a header off a corner kick from freshman Mama Amar (New York, NY/MLK) to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
D'Youville cut the lead to 2-1 when Dillon Martin scored an unassisted goal at 64:26, but SUNYIT again would give themselves a two-goal lead 44 seconds later when junior Matt Hawes (Spencer, NY/North County CC) scored a goal that was assisted by freshman Josh Kimber (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) and junior Trevor Totman (Dryden, NY/Tompkins Cortland). D'Youville added another goal late in the half, but it wouldn't be enough as SUNYIT held on for the win.
The Wildcats would go on to hold Medaille to just eight shots in the tournament championship, while getting unassisted goals by senior Daniel Twumasi (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) at the 23-minute mark and sophomore Chris Staulters (Broadalbin, NY/Galway) at the 56-minute mark to take home the title.
The Wildcats will look to continue their winning ways this Sunday, September 12 when they host local rival Utica College for their season home opener at Wildcat Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.
