Wildcats Off to a 2-0 Start at Home Invitational; To Play at 10 am and Noon Tomorrow

MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Men's Volleyball Team (2-0, 0-0 NEAC) started off on the right foot Friday evening, winning their first two matches of the year at their home invitational. The Wildcats swept both of their first round matches, 3-0.

In the 4:00 pm tilt, the Wildcats bested the Raptors of Bard College 25-17, 25-22, 25-22.

Second-year outside hitter Evan Smith (Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) had a big day for the Wildcats, leading the team with 9 kills on 17 attempts.

Freshman hitter Bobby Nilsen (Bohemia, N.Y. / Connetquot) had an impressive debut for SUNYIT, knocking out 7 kills on 16 attempts while committing no errors, good for a .438 hitting percentage to lead the team. Nilsen also added 3 block assists, including assisting on a nice block by sophomore Sean Conte (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton). In the 6:00 pm matchup, SUNYIT again cruised to a 3-0 victory, this time over the Mustangs of Mount Ida College 25-13, 25-19, 25-16.

Bobby Niles stayed hot in the second game for the Wildcats tallying 7 kills on 10 attempts. The Wildcats also got a big game out of setter Jeff Knapp (Hamlin, N.Y. / Brockport) who earned 20 assists and recorded 7 digs for the hosts, leading the team in both categories.

The Wildcats play in the Championship bracket tomorrow starting at 10 am then following at Noon.
