MARCY, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Men's Volleyball Team (5-2, 0-0 NEAC) defeated Keuka on Saturday evening in straight sets to finish the day with a 1-1 split.
In the team's first match of the day, the Wildcats took the Southern Vermont Mountaineers to 5 sets before falling in the finale, 15-7.
After dropping a close first set 25-23, SUNYIT rallied back to take the second set 25-18 and the third set 26-24. With the fourth set tied 23-23, however, the Mountaineers set up Anthony Barahona for back-to-back kills to force a fifth set, which the Mountaineers ran away with to take the match.
The Wildcats watched the middle match between Southern Vermont and Keuka (a 3-1 victory for Southern Vermont), and then got to work against conference rival Keuka. The match gets marked as a non-conference contest, as the Wildcats and Storm will face each other twice more this season during NEAC play.
SUNYIT certainly hopes Saturday's match will act as precursor for the rest of the year, as the Wildcats swept the Storm 3-0. Sean Conte (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) led all players with 9 kills on 21 attempts, while Evan Smith (Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) and Matthew Cardot (Rush-Henrietta, N.Y. / Sperry) each added 7 kills.
Setting the table for the Wildcats was Jeff Knapp (Hamlin, N.Y. / Brockport), who finished with 28 assists on the match to go along with a team-high 11 digs.
SUNYIT will head to Cazenovia next for a midweek match. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 4th, at 7:00 pm.
