AURORA, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Men's Volleyball Team (11-4, 3-1 NEAC) broke the program wins record they set last year, winning both of their matches over the weekend to improve to 11-4 on the year and break last year's record win total of 10.
The Wildcats took down by-now familiar foes Keuka and Cazenovia, defeating the Storm 3-1 in their first match before dispatching their fellow Wildcats in straight sets during the afternoon tilt.
Jeff Knapp (Hamlin, N.Y. / Brockport) had a superb match against the Storm. The junior setter totaled 42 assists in the four-setter for an average of 10.5 assists per set. Knapp was near flawless on the day, committing just one service error and one ball-handling error all match.
Of course, Knapp's sets needed a place to go, and on Saturday many of them went to the big lefty Sean Conte (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton), who turned in one of his best matches of the season with a 14 kill performance to lead the team. Conte needed just 24 attempts on the day and finished with a team high hitting percentage of .417, his second-highest percentage of the year so far.
On the defensive end it was A.J. Davids (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) and Justin Rich (Hamburg, N.Y. / Eden) pacing SUNYIT. Davids led all players on both sides of the net in blocks with 5 total, while Rich's 21 digs were also a match-high, helping SUNYIT to out-dig their opponent 53-39.
In the afternoon SUNYIT made quick work of a struggling Cazenovia team. Conte again led the team in kills with 10, but senior Timothy Maracic (Franklin, N.Y. / Carey) also turned in a solid match with 6 kills, 5 digs, and a match-high 4 aces.
The Wildcats will be off for a couple weeks, returning after spring break with a non-conference tournament on Saturday, March 22nd, at the Mt. Saint Vincent Quad. First match is scheduled for 1:30 pm against the host, Mt. Saint Vincent.
