RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The SUNYIT Men's Volleyball Team improved to a program-best 14-4 (3-1 NEAC) on Saturday, executing a 3-match sweep at the Mt. Saint Vincent Quad.
The Wildcats dispatched with Medgar Evers in their first match, winning each set by 10 points or more. Sean Conte (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) led the way for SUNYIT with 13 kills on 23 attempts, and the team held a .384 hitting percentage as a unit.
SUNYIT's toughest test came in their second match, as they squared off with the host College of Saint Vincent Dolphins. The Wildcats dropped the first set, 23-25, rebounded to win the second set 25-22 but then found themselves in a 2-1 hole after a third-set loss, 24-26.
With the match on the line, however, SUNYIT pulled out a 25-23 win in the fourth set and then cruised (compared to the first four sets, all of which were decided by 3 points or fewer) in the final set for a 15-10 win to take the match.
Despite the win, the Wildcats were actually out-hit by the Dolphins, who connected at a .254 clip to SUNYIT's .174. Where the Wildcats exerted their influence, however, was on defense, where they out-dug the Dolphins 36-30, and recorded 16 block-assists to the Dolphins' 9. Leading SUNYIT in blocks was middle Alan Davids (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) with 5. The sophomore also added 6 kills and 3 digs.
In the final match of the day, SUNYIT took out Cazenovia 3-1. The struggling Cazenovia team was actually able to take a set in the 3rd, 25-21. The surprise seemed to wake up SUNYIT, who proceeded to take the 4th set in blowout fashion, 25-8.
The Wildcats now have a week off before traveling to Keuka College for an important conference weekend. SUNYIT will square off against Wells at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 29th, before taking on Lancaster Bible College at 5:00 pm.
