KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly Men's Volleyball Team (5-3, 0-1 NEAC) recorded a season-high 18 service aces en route to a relatively stress-free defeat of the Elms College Blazers on Day 1 of the Keuka Restaurant Invite, hosted by Keuka College.
SUNY Poly's previous match best on the young season was 8 aces in a five-set win over D'Youville on January 24th.
Leading the way in the category for SUNY Poly was sophomore middle Bobby Nilsen (Bohemia, N.Y. / Connetquot), who was responsible for 8 of the team's 18 aces. Nilsen strung together the majority of those winners in the final set, registering an impressive string of serves to close out a 25-14 set three victory.
As expected in a lopsided match, several players excelled for the victors. Setter Piotr Kasza (Mechowiec, Poland / Academy of American Studies) was everywhere, leading the 'Cats in both kills (7 of 16 for a .312 hitting percentage) and assists (11). The 6-foot freshman from Poland even recorded a team-high 4 blocking assists.
Returning NEAC All-Conference 1st-Teamer A.J. Davids (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) and Nilsen both hit well behind Kasza with 6 kills apiece, and Evan Smith (Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties) added 5 kills of his own.
The Wildcats will finish off the non-conference weekend with two matches tomorrow afternoon. They are set to take on the Bard Raptors at 2:00 pm and the Regis College Pride at 6:00 pm.
