Men’s Volleyball Grabs Conference Win Over Penn St.-Altoona on Day 1 of Lancaster Bible College NEAC Crossover

LANCASTER, Pa. – The SUNY Poly Men's Volleyball Team (12-10, 5-6 NEAC) picked up an always-important conference win Friday night, sweeping the Nittany Lions of Penn State Altoona in straight sets to improve to 5-6 in the NEAC.

The Wildcats had one of their best hitting matches of the year, finishing at an even .300 for the match. Leading the way was A.J. Davids (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton), who pounded out 12 kills on 19 attempts (3 errors) for a .474 kill percentage.

SUNY Poly put together a great outside-inside attack, as Davids was counterweighted by the work of middle-hitter Bobby Nilsen (Bohemia, N.Y. / Connetquot). Nilsen connected on 8 of 13 attempts (2 errors) for a .462 percentage. He also had a team-high 4 block-assists.

Of course the maestro behind all that quality hitting was freshman setter Zach Goggin (Feeding Hills, Mass. / Agawam). Goggin racked up 32 assists in the quick 3-set match, and even helped out on defense with 3 block assists. The freshman picked his spots nicely on attack as well, converting 4 of 5 attacks (1 error) for a team-high .600 hitting percentage.

It was indeed an embarrassment of riches for the Wildcats, as the team's on-court captain Dan O'Connor (Latham, N.Y. / Shaker) added to the mix with 7 kills on 13 total attempts (2 errors).

The Wildcats won the match with set scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-15.

SUNY Poly returns to the court tomorrow with a pair of increasingly important conference matches. They will take on the host Chargers first at 1:00 pm before battling Keuka at 3:00 pm.
