AURORA, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly Men's Volleyball Team (15-10, 8-6 NEAC) completed a 5-match conference winning streak to end their NEAC play by defeating Wells (11-17, 8-6 NEAC) by a score of 3-1 on Friday night in Aurora. The crucial victory gives the Wildcats a good chance at qualifying for the 4-team NEAC playoffs, depending on the outcome of several matches this weekend.
SUNY Poly won a monster first set by the score of 31-29. Bobby Nilsen (Bohemia, N.Y. / Connetquot) served out the final two points to break a 29-29 tie, with A.J. Davids (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) coming up with a block-assist and a block-solo on consecutive points to win the match.
While he didn't have the same torrid hitting numbers that led to his selection as last week's NEAC and ECAC Player of the Week, Davids once again led the Wildcats in kills with 13, to go along with a huge blocking night in which the junior recorded 3 block-solos and 3 assisted-blocks.
As it has been all during the team's five-match winning streak, the outside-inside combo of Davids and Nilsen was on fire again Friday night. Nilsen had 9 kills on 19 attempts, while recording 3 assisted-blocks and 2 aces.
SUNY Poly held Wells to a .050 hitting percentage, and recorded 46 kills to the Express's 38.
The home team was able to take the second set 25-23, but the Wildcats responded with convincing victories of 25-18 and 25-17 in the final two sets.
SUNY Poly will await the results of the weekends' matches before heading to Elmira College next weekend. There, they will take on Baruch at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 3rd, before taking on the #2 ranked team in the nation, UC Santa Cruz out of California, at 7:00 pm.
