ALFRED, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's lacrosse team took to the road on Sunday to take on Alfred University in a non-conference game. The Wildcats and the Saxons played a close first half headed to the locker room at 5-4 Wildcats. In the second half, the SUNY Poly offense put their foot on the gas to outscore Alfred 13-3. The final score of the game was 18-7.
The Wildcats had the edge in almost every statistical category. The Wildcats outshot the Saxons 43-16, landing 33 of their shots on goal. The Wildcats had less turnovers, (16-23) and doubled the Saxons nine draw controls with 18. The two teams each had 18 groundballs.
Mari Ames (West Carthage, N.Y.) had a game high six goals for the Wildcats. Ames put eight of 11 shots on goal on the day and had two assists for a total of eight points. Ames is currently leading the Wildcats in both points and goals. She has 20 points and 14 goals this season.
Kayla Prosinski (Endwell, N.Y.) had five goals for the Wildcats. The freshman has 13 goals on the year, the second highest total on the team. Prosinski had a team high 10 shots on goal in the game and had three groundballs, two caused turnovers, and a draw control.
Krysta Beha (Marcy, N.Y.) and Corrina Marconi (Rochester, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats. Beha had a team high nine points on four goals and five assists. The senior also had a game high seven groundballs, matched the entire Alfred team with a game high nine draw controls, and had a caused turnover. Marconi had two goals and six draw controls.
Brittany Waterbury (Remsen, N.Y.) earned her third win of the season. The junior faced 13 shots and made six saves in 60 minutes of work.
For Alfred, Miranda Gilbert had a team high five goals, three groundballs, two draw controls, and a caused turnover. Megan Wendt had the Saxons other two goals. Wendt took three shots, landing all three on goal had a groundball. Shannon Gray made 15 saves for the Saxons in the loss.
With the win, The Wildcats improve to 3-0 on the year while the Saxons fall to 1-4. The Wildcats will be back on the field on Wednesday, March 29th when they will travel across town to take on local rival Utica College. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on the campus of Utica College.
